What is Carotid Artery Disease?

Carotid artery disease (CAD), or carotid artery stenosis, is where the carotid arteries, the main blood vessels that supply blood to the brain, become narrowed or blocked. This narrowing is typically caused by atherosclerosis, a build-up of plaque (composed of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood) on the inner walls of the arteries.

Are You at Risk for CAD?

CAD presents a significant risk factor for stroke and can lead to other severe health complications if not addressed promptly. Other risks include:

  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Obesity
