What is Peripheral Arterial Disease?

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is a common circulatory condition in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the limbs. When you develop PAD, your extremities—usually your legs—don’t receive enough blood flow to keep up with demand. This causes symptoms, most notably leg pain when walking (claudication).

Are You at Risk of PAD?

The risk of PAD increases with age, particularly after 50. However, there are other risk factors, including:

  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Obesity
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Family history
  • Heart disease
  • High levels of homocysteine

Our vascular specialists can provide comprehensive care and treatment to prevent PAD and reduce risk.
