PRP (PLATELET-RICH PLASMA) INJECTIONS

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a non-surgical therapy that utilizes a patient’s blood to stimulate a healing reaction within a damaged joint or tissue. Because of the growth factors in platelets, platelet-rich plasma can aid the healing process.

BENEFITS OF PRP

PRP injections support healing in both acute injuries and degenerative diseases. PRP is a safe, conservative non-surgical technique that utilizes the patient’s blood for healing. Patients who have used PRP report less pain, more mobility, and faster recovery. More research is demonstrating the significant healing potential of PRP for conditions such as arthritis and tendonitis.

HOW IT WORKS

bmacSeveral conditions can be considered treatment with BMAC. Utilizing research and clinical outcomes, our orthopedic regenerative medicine team utilizes BMAC in certain tendon, cartilage and ligament injuries, as well as moderate osteoarthritis of the knee and shoulder.  It is most often performed as an adjunct to certain elective surgeries to enhance healing.

Specific uses for Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate include:

  • Osteoarthritis of the knee and shoulder
  • Rotator cuff tears
  • UCL tears in the elbow of throwing athletes
  • Ligament tears
  • Muscle strains or tears
  • Articular cartilage injuries
  • Advanced tendon injuries

PRP is not covered by insurance. Cost is $650, $950 bilateral, and due at time of service.

PRP PROCEDURE

bmac

In PRP therapy, blood is drawn from the patient. Platelets are separated from other blood cells and their concentration is increased, and the platelet-rich blood is then injected into the damaged joint or tissue. PRP injections are administered in our clinic, and the procedure lasts approximately 30 minutes to an hour.

Most patients utilize PRP injections one time. However, depending on the pain, some find multiple injections to be most effective.

RISKS AND SIDE EFFECTS OF PRP
The body has an amazing ability to heal itself. PRP therapy is a way to enhance healing, reduce pain and reduce inflammation. It is not an option for every patient. Results vary, which makes it complicated to recommend to all patients.

If you are taking anti-inflammatory medication or blood thinners, you may be asked to temporarily discontinue use until treatment has taken place. Pain, bruising at the injection site, rash, redness, and swelling are potential side effects.  In rare instances, infection, tissue damage, and nerve injuries are reported problems.

PRP is a safe, clinically accepted procedure. Due to the variation in results, insurance companies do not often cover this service.  Call us to make an appointment to see if you may be a candidate for PRP injections.
