At Sano, we believe in transforming health outcomes through integrated and compassionate care. For Devaun, that transformation began on September 30, 2024, when she underwent gastric bypass surgery with Dr. Joseph. Now, one year later, her story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when patients are empowered, educated, and supported every step of the way.
Born in 1969, Devaun had long considered weight loss surgery. She was well-informed and had done her research, even reading The Easy Way Out, a book she now recommends to others preparing for bariatric surgery. “It helped me set realistic expectations,” she shared. “I knew what to expect, and that made all the difference.”
Devaun’s Bariatric Surgery Journey
Her journey wasn’t without delays. After initially planning for surgery, she lost her insurance, which added over a year to her timeline. But she remained committed. When the time came, she chose Dr. Joseph for his reputation and trusted him completely. “I followed all of Dr. Joseph’s instructions,” she said. “The process was smooth, and I had no complications.”
For Devaun, the decision wasn’t driven by existing health issues—it was about preventing them. “I was tired of not being active,” she explained. “I knew if I stayed overweight, health problems would eventually catch up with me.”
Life After Surgery
Today, her life looks completely different.
She rides 14 to 15 miles on her bike, has energy that lasts all day, and participates in activities she never would have considered before. Her husband jokes that she “never stops,” and she laughs, knowing it’s true. “I’m not sweating or leaning when I stand anymore. I feel good.”
One of her favorite moments? Going to the splash pad with her 3-year-old grandson and riding the slide—something she wouldn’t have done before surgery. “I’m living life now,” she said. “I’m joining in, not sitting on the sidelines.”
Devaun knows her journey isn’t over. “This is ongoing,” she said. “But I’m committed.” Her story is a testament to the power of proactive care, education, and the kind of compassionate support Sano strives to provide every day.
